The Bourgeois Large Soundhole D incorporates many of the features that bluegrass flatpickers search for in those "Holy Grail" pre-war dreadnoughts. The enlarged soundhole, special rosette, custom pickguard and blank, bound 21-fret fingerboard capture the proper authentic aura for this specialty model. Dana has also incorporated the hallmarks of his own current designs, including Aged Tone torrefied top, braces and Aged Tone finish. The result is a more of a tribute than a replica, and Bourgeois feels that it makes the perfect bluegrass guitar. 2. Bourgeois Banjo Killer - Bearclaw Sitka/Figured Mahogany #7593
    $5,665.00

Upgraded with what Dana Bourgeois called "Rare and Ultra Uber Figured Mahogany"

The Banjo Killer is a slope shouldered dreadnought with a premium bearclaw Sitka spruce top and figured mahogany back and sides. The guitar is modeled after Bryan Sutton’s famous Bourgeois dubbed the “Banjo Killer". The fingerboard and belly bridge are figured ziricote wood. The Tor-tis pickguard is handmade, and the bridge pins are ebony with abalone dots. The tuners are Nickel Waverly with ivoroid buttons. Here's what IBMA "Guitar Player of the Year" Bryan Sutton has to say about the guitar: "From the first time I played the Slope-D Bourgeois that would come to be known as the "Banjo Killer", I was amazed at the range of tone and volume the guitar could produce. The guitar always seems to be to able to handle any dynamic level of play. I can hear the guitar clearly in a loud jam session without feeling like I have to overplay and also enjoy a full and sustained tone when I want to play softly.” Dana Bourgeois has this to say: "The BK Slope D has a deep, broad tone. Through wood selection and voicing, we push it in the direction of a bigger bottom end, a "lush" top end, and greater volume, similar to the characteristics of Bryan's original Banjo Killer. When I first started making slope shouldered dreadnoughts, I went for something as different as possible from the balanced and focused sound of my standard. The Banjo Killer gets me back to that original idea."

  5. Bourgeois Vintage Dreadnought - Adirondack / Indian Rosewood #132
    $4,540.00

The best thing about Bourgeois' Vintage Dreadnought is that you don't have to imagine what it might sound like if you custom ordered it with an Adirondack spruce top. Theirs is the only standard herringbone - style dreadnought that can make this claim. Adirondack spruce, also known as Eastern Red Spruce, was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Properly sawn, Adirondack is much stiffer than Sitka and Engelmann spruce, both along and across the grain. This allows Bourgeois to make thinner, lighter tops, resulting in lightning-quick response and power to spare. Most guitar grade "Adirondack" spruce these days comes from their own backyard--the state of Maine, which still has large stands of original and second growth softwood forests.
