The square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought is the most popular steel-string acoustic guitar body shape in the world. While Collings is certainly not the only company to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. Although its bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, Collings versions are also often employed by bluegrass flatpickers who must compete with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles.

This Larrivee D-40R Bluegrass Special is the built specifically for the Bluegrass player. Featuring a Sitka Spruce top, hand-selected by the folks at Larrivee specifically for maximum bluegrass projection. Add to that, an enlarged sound hole for increased volume and a wider soundstage. Beautiful Koa binding, and Larrivee's JCL inlay at the 12th fret, further set this D-40R apart as something special. For the Bluegrass player, this one's a killer!

Larrivee's revolutionary 40 Series features Jean's innovative "Scalloped Parabolic Hybrid" bracing system design. Based on their tried and true "X-Brace" design, Jean blended a non-symmetrical scalloped lateral cross-bracing pattern. This means maximum strength using the least amount of material. The 40 Series are built in America using all solid wood, like all Larrivée's, and feature brand new upgrades like bone bridge pins, nut and saddle, diamond fingerboard dots and Grover 18:1 open back tuners.
